Although (and I may just be nitpicking) in the original strip, the man's gaze is (or seems?) slightly raised, as if he's looking up to the heavens for the power of science. That was what really did it for me -- he had the "as God is my witness" pose, but instead of invoking divinity, he was invoking Science. In your new strip, the character's gaze is level, so he kind of just looks like he's angrily muttering to himself like a crazy man, instead of dramatically calling upon the Powers From Above.
