Three Years

Just for fun, I redrew the first two panels of one of my favourite of the early SCP comics.

Here’s the start of Science, circa 2005:

And here’s what I did earlier this morning:

My conclusion: hands are friggin’ hard to draw.

Here’s an edit where the guy’s showing a little more emotion:

Though the art is clearly better, the character seems to lost the fanatical look that for me, helped make the comic.

WCS (What Cayce Said). Lovely second first panel, but the character’s expression in the first second panel is so much more dramatic! He looks like he’s about to throw open the doors of the neighborhood wet lab and start mixin’ up some Science!

  3. Nate

I, too, feel like your updated protagonist has lost something important. He’s less emotional, less interesting.

  4. Vitor

I think the character in the second strip is a robot trying to pass as a human. Or a very boring man.

  5. Sean Connery

The edit is much better. The guy’s passion is really what makes this comic.

It’s interesting how reading through the archives I don’t really notice the change in the art, but here the improvement is dramatic. Nice job!

  6. Cayce

WOAH! That’s perfect! I love it, and you so much!

  7. Rob Hunter

The updated emotional dude is a winner.

Please redo the hole comic. It’s one of your best!

Thumbs up. Although (and I may just be nitpicking) in the original strip, the man’s gaze is (or seems?) slightly raised, as if he’s looking up to the heavens for the power of science. That was what really did it for me — he had the “as God is my witness” pose, but instead of invoking divinity, he was invoking Science. In your new strip, the character’s gaze is level, so he kind of just looks like he’s angrily muttering to himself like a crazy man, instead of dramatically calling upon the Powers From Above.

That is also one of my favorite SCP, total classic. I do sort of agree with the new rendition of the man though. We’ll have to see how it comes together with the rest of the re-do!

Sorry, I didn’t see the 3rd panel. He is awesome.

I think that the original one is perfect the way it is; the emotions of the character were expressed perfectly, and even if the art is “simplier”, it does an excellent job of telling the story. The original is my favorite comic you’ve made, man.

Angry guy for the win. Awesome.
