The Book is Done!

March 21st, 2008

I’ve just finished the final export of the book, and it is currently being uploaded to the printer. It will take about a week for them to produce the first proof, and then a couple of days for it to be shipped to me for final approval. Assuming everything goes smoothly, it should be available for sale in about 2 weeks!

Here’s a preview:

The final page count was 86. It includes most of the comics up to Dexterity Roll - some of early stinkers were removed - and the 3-page short The Visit. The foreword is by none other than Zach Weiner of Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal.

My goal is to make the after-shipping cost about 20 bucks for North America. Given the printing costs, this means about $5 profit for every book sold.

Thanks to everyone who gave feedback on the cover designs. I ended up going with the Gordon remix:

The circuit diagrams in the background, and the PCB layout on the back were taken from my undergraduate thesis project, and were actually used to build a real, functioning robot. His name was boxy.

Sorry for the lack of updates this week - I’ve been pretty busy. I did manage to make a guest comic for another site that should show up sometime soon (I’ll link to it here). I hope to get a holiday-themed strip out sometime today or tomorrow.

I do like that comic cover better, but the inside pages leave a little bit to be desired. If you take a look at most professional comics they have little do dads on the pages, rather than just straight comics, here’s a quick mock-up I did as a kinda example:

Obviously I’ll still be buying it day one, but it’s something to keep in mind for future book releases.

Almasy, I’m very curious as to where you got a picture of a dead bunny in the same pose at that panel . . . :)
