These Gigs
Today’s strip was inspired by this recent foray into the uncanny valley.
Work on the book is progressing. I’m looking to include ALL of the strips, which will result in a page count of about 100. This will mean a manufacturing cost of about 20 bucks. I’m not planning on putting in any extra material, but I have arranged a foreword to the be written by another comic creator who will remain nameless for now

Well Spoted NS_Fred151! So that’s what happened to him! He must have lasted a long time because last time we saw him it was in a society where Robots were banned from working, and now they seem to rule the world. Guess we jumped ahead a couple of Millennia.

I think most of us would be willing to pay a couple bucks more for some bonus material. Heck, that’s the best part of anything, book, movie, whatever.

Aww, robots is not a fun crowd, is it?
That’s okay, ‘It pays well’, it does. (: (Ah, yes, I see the eyebrows robot! Thatnks for pointing him out!)

Heheheh. Great storyline continuity.
I know this is going to sound very annoying, but he’s holding the bow too high. Sorry for that.

He is, indeed, holding the bow too high. But I’m going to listen to the obnoxious, technical, heartless and soulless Caprices now. Robots. No taste. ^.^ Me either, apparently.

Eyebrows Robot is a cutie pie.
At least with them he doesn’t have to say, “You’ve been a great crowd, thank you!”
Also, why wouldn’t they just get a robot violinist who would be able to play the piece PERFECTLY?
I am a sax player/guitarist, so I wouldn’t know.

Sarah!
Perhaps.. They do it because as robots, their lives are perfectly ordered, but as most were probably built by humans, they were programmed to tolerate, enjoy, or even relish a little disharmony, like people playing imperfect music?

Maybe their entertainment is analyzing how he, the performer, went wrong?
October 8th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
Exactly, when everything is perfect there is no entertainment when everything is performed exactly as it’s programmed to. Their entertainment comes from the suspense of not knowing when he is going to mess up. Although I don’t get the reference to paginini.

The robots clearly take pride and love in wallowing in the imperfection of humans. It makes them feel superior – more inherently valuable. Since humans created the robots, and a robot revolution hasn't appeared to have taken place here (at least not one that killed all humans), they take out their innate pride by paying to have a human play music which they can then sit around and analyze.
Kinda like how we enjoy watching videos of stupid people doing stupid things and getting themselves hurt, or what have you.
Additionally, I find it humorous that the robots, who spend their free time analyzing the mistake of humans, are themselves falling into the same flaws that humans have – taking delight in the weakness of others.
