The Webcomics Idol competition is heating up! We all know that Templar, Arizona is going to win, but I’d love to see SCP make the top five, so if you haven’t already, head to the voting page.

Could somebody explain it to me?

  2. Manuel Rincon-Cruz

Brilliant! The nonsense of the unexpected result does warrant humor, similar to a brain being surprise tickled from the inside.

    sad

(Well, someone asked for an explanation of the joke…) The joke is that the woman is a writer of horror novels. When she says “I get my ideas from dreams”, we’re supposed to assume that the story plots occur in her dreams as nightmares, not that she has (relatively) normal dreams where a fluffy rabbit with a typewriter gives her the ideas. ^_^ I found it to be quite hilarious, mainly because of the woman’s expression in the last panel and the final line. Classic. (Where can *I* get a giant bunny to give me story ideas? Is that where you get your ideas from as well, Mr. Kevin?)

  5. douglas mcleod

I think you would have to examine this strip quite forensically to find that joke buried away and thats not how I thought comic strips operated. You would have to notice the title of the book which appears in frame 2 rather than frame one. You would have to interpret ’stand to sleep’ to just mean ‘how does she sleep’ and you would have think that the rabbit was cute to stand even a chance. Now i see it all and still do not think it funny.

  6. douglas mcleod

Oh yes and i had to look up what evisceration meant so not very ‘immediate’.

  7. Ramsey

Ah, Douglas…. Not everyone chooses to be slapped in the face with their humor. So this comic is not the equivalent of an Adam Sandler movie, that does not mean it is unfunny.

  8. ponyboy

by the way: what DOES evisceration mean?

  9. Jack

disembowel. Like, cut out the guts out of something.

  10. Jason

If you have to look up what evisceration means, then you probably aren’t really in a position to dissect humor that doesn’t involve bodily fluids. And I mean that in the kindest way, really. ;)

  11. ginby

yeah see i didnt get the joke till the read time i read it and looked at the book title, if it said horror on that banner that fiction itd be obivously easier to notice, but it is quite funny when u notice it lol

  12. A different Jason

Well, I thought it was funny.

  13. Douglas Mcleod

Ramsey I dont think its in any way subtle just obscure. Jason, when is the last time you used the word ‘evisceration’ not counting here which is specifically discussing it. If it forms a common part of your vocabulary and you lived nearby I think I might be a little worried.

  14. Clint

I totally eviscerated a chicken last night.

    True story.

  15. Jason

There are lots of words that I don’t use on a daily basis, but I know the meaning of, thanks to an education and being, if not well read, at least literate. Imbecile, for example. ;)

  16. Douglas Mcleod

Jason I dont think the first comma is necessary and the last sentence lacks a verb.

  17. Jason

And now we come to the inevitable portion of the discussion where it devolves to nitpicking about proper grammar on the intarwebs. I mean, after all, my well thought out and iron clad argument is obviously immune to any other kind of criticism.

    j
“Why should anyone take me seriously if I don’t?”

  18. ilya

Jason, douglas is right. also, what’s with the extra semicolon and parenthesis? you need to have two separate thoughts for a semicolon and at least a starting parenthesis for a closing one.

all joking aside, i gotta disagree. the premise was pretty obvious from the first two panels.

  19. Douglas Mcleod

Does it happen a lot then Jason?

  20. Jason

What, are you not the same internet that I am? Grammar and Godwin’s Law, that’s what make forums go round. Well, that and references to the other poster’s sexual preferences.

  21. Douglas Mcleod

Grammar I would say is important because where that is in doubt meaning is in doubt. Ive had to look up Godwins Law but it seems to me to be quite sensible if it is saying try not to call your oponent a Nazi unless he really does attempt to invade Poland. As to the posters sexual preferences I prefer not to think about that.
I dont think spelling or puinctuation are important and thus absolve myself from all critisism on those counts.

  22. Clint

“I dont think spelling or puinctuation are important and thus absolve myself from all critisism on those counts.”

    Uhh…yeah…so, the thing is…

    Never mind.

  23. Jason

    i like pie.

  24. Jordan

Excellent comic, Kevin. Not sure what all the fuss is about.

Douglas is a doofus. I didn’t have to think about the comic at all. It was immediately funny. It’s not the artist’s fault you don’t know what eviscerate means, nor is it his fault you lack a sense of humor.

  26. douglas mcleod

It is the artists fault that I dont know what eviscerate means when he is writing a comic strip. If he were writing a medical journal then it would be my fault.

  27. Milander

No Douglas, it is your fault for having had, what seems to be, a very poor education. Why don’t you go read a few books and elevate your vocabulary. your nitpicking here is detracting from other peoples enjoyment of the strip because your obviously inarticulate comments are far more humorous. :p

Did you seriously say it’s the artist’s fault that YOU don’t know what a word means? Are you serious? Maybe you should just stick to Family Circus and Garfield.

  29. anon

Wow, what a bunch of stuck up snobs!

Indubitably a cracking comic, my good sir!
    Indeed!

I take issue on that, man!
    Forsooth!

    Ahahahhahahhahahaha

    - Anonymous has spoken! -

  30. Carolyn

I didn’t know what eviscerate meant, yet managed to find this funny.
Also, folks, stop feeding the troll.

Also, I love the expression on her face in the third panel. Perfect!

  31. Not You

Even though I did not know the exact meaning of eviscerate I was still able to make a reasoned guess at the general meaning of the word due to the context it was used in.

That said the comment section is almost as funny as the actual strip its self.

  32. douglas mcleod

The Troll has had more than his fill and gone home.

The whole thing makes me giggle! It’s almost nearly a reference to Stephen King, isn’t it? I believe my mum did mention he got his stories from his dreams, but that’s what makes this one so funny.
    Good job!

And to the commenters, also good job! You’ve all succeeded in making me giggle at you (no offence, I mean this as a compliment!) and even more at the strip.

    Good job, good job!

  35. DM

I actually find rabbits quite frightening!

  36. ponyboy

Now just to make things clear: The fact that I don’t understand all the words does not (always) hinder me from getting the point. And it ceirtanly is not stopping me from loving this comic. I could propably excuse myself for this lack of extended vocabulary as I come from a rather obscure part of Europe and English is not my first language. I do not, in general, appreciate fancy words being used just for the sake of snobbyness (if that’s even a word), but I do think it’s well used in the comic since the whole point is the bunny giving her tips on a particular word she can use in her book.
Scary bunny though… just like there’s “someone” inside a bunny suit. (Ever seen “Donnie Darko”?)

Douglas, learn to read . Seriously.

    This is not hard.

  38. DM

How could you put “evisceration” succintly, in any case? “Cutting people open and taking out their internal organs” is a bit wordy.

  39. T-Roland

    Definately one of my favourites.

  40. BlackDraco

She’s a writer, that’s why she uses such vocabulary.

btw, i’m from south america, my main language is spanish, and already knew what eviscerate means.

  41. Douglas is...

    A dumbass!
    GOOD DAY SIR

  42. manic mole

    heh, this one is awesome.

also lol augueing about a comic on the internet.

  43. Daniel

I am so stupid. I had to read a couple of comments before I got the joke. If only I had read the title of the strip I would of got it right away.

  44. A Fan

Try not to listen to these guys.
I can’t be the only one who gets every joke first time through, and think it cannot be improved upon?

  45. Fox

I think the best part is that she’s dressed like Snow White and sitting on a fantasy mushroom straight out of Alice in Wonderland, whilst talking to a giant bunny…. OH THE HORROR! :D

  46. jack

    wtf? i dont get it

  47. Anonny

Read the comment above yours, Jack, and you’ll get it.

  48. Evil Engine Number Nine

I love this comic and all confusion about it’s intent is just.. well, confusing.
Also does she have a dream recorder or something so that she can remember
what the Bunny types because I remember no more than vauge pictures of even my most vivid dreams.

  49. FatLou

Just seeing the big happy bunny in the last panel made laugh but seeing that he suggested evisceration made me really crack up.

heh heh, best yet! I also get a lot of ideas from dreams and daydreams!

  51. HappyEngineer

I thought it was funny, but all this talk about evisceration is making want to work it into daily conversation somehow. Sadly, I don’t really have much call for violent words in my day to day life, but I’m sure I can work it in somehow.

  52. Richard

If you don’t know a word … google it or look it up on dictionary.com. Then you’ll not only understand the joke, but you’ll have learned a new word as well!

  53. Bleaghhh

Thanks a lot everybody. Now at some point in the next i will have to use evisceration in my vocabulary. Unfortunately I’m only 15 so there is not much chance of many of my peers understanding it.

  54. ANT

The writer in me is very amused.

And able to sympathize, minus the published part.
