This was subtle. Took me reading it a second time to remember Bauxite is required to make aluminum, and a third reading before I realized why he’d want to do that.
But then, I may just be dense.

Well…I didn’t get it all. So either I am extremely dense, or neither of us are dense. Eh, I am a little dense, you are not.

Test, the first panel - “Looking for cans”.

I’m having trouble figuring out why he’d either a) want all the world’s bauxite (except to sell, in which case the comic isn’t funny) or b) want all of the world’s bauxite to disappear completely. I realize it’s likely option ‘a’ since he’s probably homeless and it’s money, but then he’d just ask for money, so what gives?
It just seems to me that I’m missing something that could make it more than a genie in a lamp being asked for money. Is there something about aluminum or bauxite in the bible that I don’t know?
As an aside, the strip makes it pretty clear that bauxite is used to make aluminum and that makes you recall the first panel.
Also, amusingly enough, a google search reveals that someone has called Bauxite, Arkansas the “buckle of the Bible belt”, and links to this sermon which references bauxite into aluminum: http://www.all-creatures.org/sermons97/s14sep97.html

That’s “foil hat keeps out the demons” guy, and bauxite is aluminum ore.

Very good; took me a second to understand it, but quite funny. Please do more subtle-funny/smart-funny jokes like these, they’re rare gems on the internet and much appreciated.

i think this is extremely clever and well done. it’s witty, has a great reveal, and uses the entire comic well.
however, it is a bit unfortunate if you’re not familiar with bauxite. i basically did not understand it until i read another post. i would say for casual readers, they would be unlikely to look down or look it up. likewise, they may not understand the importance even if they do.
to p0ntus, you have either fallen one step short of understanding the wit of this particular strip or just hate inefficiency of the comic’s protagonist.
however, i would have to agree on the confusion about the bible and aluminum or granting wishes. i can see it as “jesus is magic” or it being part of your long line of religion-themed jokes. i hope the reasoning is more fulfilling than these.

It’s perfectly clear to me. I hate to have to explain a joke.
He is looking for cans. He gets a wish. He’s so wrapped up in his own little world that instead of wishing for world peace or even to be fabulously wealthy, he wishes for all the aluminum in the whole world. So he can take it down to the recycling place and get 5 cents a pound for it. It’s pretty darn funny.

This one is great and I got it immediately. I admit that being unfamiliar with bauxite would make the punchline confusing, but explaining it any more here would compromise the brevity of the joke.
Also, I thought the idea of a magic bible with an angel trapped inside was very funny.

The angel was a nice twist on the genie concept, and as far as bauxite goes, the fact that from the name of the mine implies they have to do with aluminum, you’d have to be more than a little thick not to get it. I had no idea what bauxite was and I still got it

Same as lots of the above, took me a little bit to get but when i did i lold.. agree 100% with what Dan A says bout the bauxite..
Great strip! keep it up.

I agree with Jeremy. I had no idea what bauxite was, and I understood the joke fine. Come on! Alumicorp? Looking for cans? It’s not that difficult.
August 6th, 2008 at 6:44 am
A fantastic strip. Dan A explained it perfectly, the only reason it’s funny is because of the inanity of him wishing for all the bauxite instead of just money or something.
Also, the public schools here in backwoods Arkansas have taught us what bauxite is multiple times, however that might just be because we’re a major source of it. At any rate, “aluminum cans” and “alumicorp” kinda give it away.

lol. i wish i could be as stoked as that homeless guy and his cans. hilarious once u get it lolz

I interpreted it not as he wants all the world’s bauxite, but he wished for it to completely disappear, which would make the handful of cans he currently owns infinitely more valuable. Not that it really matters…
